Artist Statement

As an artist, using different mediums has allowed me to expand myself and my craft. My work is subject to change depending on how I am currently feeling about myself and the world. Sometimes my work is about awareness, with a focus on human emotion. Sometimes it’s political, explicitly focused on issues that affect me or the ones closest to me. My work reflects what I am currently experiencing. If I am feeling like I need a break from the chaos of life, I try and reach deeply into myself and my thoughts. Some things that influence me as a person, that seep into my work, are nature and literature.

Sculpture allows me to communicate with the world and myself, It allows me to communicate my intention(s), not only with the media’s strengths but also through its manipulation. By manipulating different media like clay, wood, metal, fabric, concrete, resin, I am able to express emotion through the viewer. What fascinates me about sculpture is the ability to manage someone's emotions not only through the materials but also the intent that guides creating. I want my work to be like a mirror, where my thoughts and feelings are easily viewed.

While my work is primarily about me, I want viewers to be able to connect with it in some way or another. I want it to be vague enough where not everything is discussed in detail, but that it still makes you feel something when you look at it.

I often think about what my life means and what it means to be me, as a human. This sometimes can go down a rabbit hole that I then try to reflect on my art when I feel that I need it. Ancient Greek and Roman art, especially sculptural art, influence my work through its storytelling themes and attention to detail. The ability to carve a stone into a beautiful life-like piece fascinates me. It inspires me to understand the roots of sculpture, but also how simple it is to express emotion through a work of art
